The Dutch have never been known for their refined cuisine. Which does not come as a great surprise when you remember that they love eating raw herring with finely chopped onions - and that they wash it all down with a shot of jenever. Or take their national dish Stamppot: meat including bacon or sausage, potatoes and vegetables. They mash it all together, make an indentation and add gravy before eating. Their thick pea soup is served with bacon and rye bread, especially on wintery days. Very strange and yet: in its own unique way this is exactly what has made this small country so great.
